Silverback Productions Presents "Operation Citadel" on September 16, 2017
In the heart of World War II, the Wehrmacht was weakened by the loss of men and equipment in the battle of Stalingrad, but the army still could put more than three million troops in the field, and Hitler was eager to prove the German army was still formidable.
The battle on multiple fronts was slowing the spread of the German army. Strategists in Berlin insisted that they could score a win and eliminate the Soviets from the conflict. A march on Moscow and the eminent surrender seemed within reach. Learning from their mistakes from Stalingrad, the German military machine began mid-summer 1943 with smaller skirmishes. The purpose was both probing, but also to back up the Soviet Army in the place of the German’s choosing.
After months of delay, Hitler decided to put his troops to the test in one great offensive that he said “will shine like a beacon around the world.”
Operation Citadel was aimed at eliminating the Soviet Red Army at Kursk. The town itself was of minor significance; it was chosen because it was situated in a bulge between the fronts of Field Marshal Erich von Manstein's Army Group South and Field Marshal Hans Gunther von Kluge's Army Group Center. Hitler believed the attack would destroy five Soviet armies and thereby prevent the Soviets from mounting any offensives for at least the remainder of the year, if at all. This could possibly turn the tide, allowing Germany to direct more resources to the Mediterranean theater.
Should the Germans break the spirit of the Soviets, they would have a clear march straight to Moscow. Choose your side. Win the war.
